TEXAS GREYHOUND ASSOCIATION RESPONSE TO EBRO TRAGEDY

The TGA membership is shocked and saddened about the suffering and death of greyhounds discovered at the Ebro, FL race track kennel compound.   It is important to understand that these were the actions of one individual, not an industry. Help was offered and available; it was refused and the individual deliberately acted in secret.

The TGA joins with the National Greyhound Association, the American Greyhound Council, the American Greyhound Track Operators, state greyhound associations and every greyhound owner in calling for aggressive prosecution and severe punishment of all individuals involved in this tragedy. (more)

Palm Beach Kennel Club is hosting the 7th Greyhound Safety and Track Surface Seminar on November 7-9.  This Seminar is co-sponsored by the Texas Greyhound Association, Gulf Greyhound Park and AGTOA.  There is a great group of speakers and topics lined up on the Agenda

The 7th Greyhound Safety and Track Surface Seminar is set for November 8 & 9.  Palm Beach Kennel Club will be hosting the Seminar, which is co-sponsored by AGTOA, Gulf Greyhound Park and the Texas Greyhound Association.  We have some excellent speakers and timely topics lined up for the Seminar, and we will post the agenda on the website as soon as it is finalized.

The 3rd Quarter meeting of the Board of Directors will be held on Wednesday, September 8 at the TGA office at 11:00 a.m. Click to view the agenda.

Following is the Agenda for the Committee on Greyhound Race Dates.

The Texas Racing Commission has released an excerpt from its Strategic Plan 2011-2015. This is very interesting reading and gives a good overview of the competition facing pari-mutuel racing in Texas.

The TGA Board of Directors will hold its quarterly meeting at the TGA offices in Lorena on Wednesday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m.  All TGA members are encouraged to attend.  Click to view the agenda.

Texas Round-Up Postponed

The Texas Round-Up scheduled for Memorial Day at Gulf Greyhound Park has been postponed.  Due to unsafe track conditions caused by heavy rains, the Saturday, May 15 performances were cancelled, including the first stakes elimination round.  By rescheduling the first round to the following Thursday evening, it caused many of the stakes entrants to go over 10 days between races.  Coupled with a short 2-day turn-around to the second elimination, the greyhounds would not have enough time between races to recoup.  The TGA Board determined that these circumstances were not in the best interests of the greyhounds, and will work with Gulf to get the Round-Up rescheduled.

Dog World magazine features the greyhound in its April edition.  There is good coverage of the greyhound in “Meet the Breed:  Poetry in Motion”.  The TGA co-sponsored an ad with the American Greyhound Council in appreciation of the many adoption groups and volunteers that make greyhound adoption the “leader of the pack” in dog adoptions.

Purses for 2010

The TGA finished its negotiations on the Global Cross-Species Simulcast Agreement, which is a contractual agreement between the horsemen, horse tracks, TGA and greyhound tracks.  The horsemen agreed to give to greyhound purses an additional .5% on interstate simulcast horse handle at greyhound tracks, effective April 18 through December 31, 2010.  This will result in an estimated $120,000 additional to greyhound purses, based on 2009 numbers.

However, handle is down at all of the racetracks in 2010.  If you would like to stay abreast of the numbers, the Texas Racing Commission posts a comparative year-to-date handle chart on its website, http://www.txrc.state.tx.us/agency/data/wagerstats/wagering_stats.php

Since 100% of greyhound purses are from the handle, purse values will fluctuate week to week.  The chart from the TxRC is helpful to show how the numbers are trending this year.  As shown on the chart, greyhound live handle is down 16.8% at Gulf Greyhound Park.

Gulf Greyhound Park Repairs to Reopen

La Marque, Texas 9/16/08….Gulf Greyhound Park was hit hard by Hurricane Ike suffering
substantial damage to the roof, tote board and the racing area.

While the building and the racing area suffered damage no greyhounds were injured.
Because of the track’s high elevation the kennel’s trainers, greyhounds and farm puppies
were invited to stay on property to ride out the storm. The track’s kennels are all
equipped with generators; they never lost their lights or air conditioning at any time
during or after the storm. Gulf Greyhound Park’s kennel owners and trainers are eager to
get their athletes back on the track to school and begin racing again. (more)

Greyhound Safety and Hurricane Ike

Under the threat of Hurricane Ike, the Texas greyhound industry has been working together to ensure the safety of our greyhounds and people. The only greyhound race track operating currently is Gulf Greyhound Park. The greyhounds located at Gulf Greyhound Park are safest remaining where they are.

Click the link to view information on the Storm and Flood Emergency Plans of the racetracks which we published in 2005 with Hurricane Rita.

Gulf Greyhound Park

GGP is located in La Marque, 15 miles inland from Galveston. The kennel buildings were built to withstand a Category 4 hurricane, and are elevated 19-21 feet.

Sally Briggs, general manager, said that the kennel compound would be open for any farm dogs, as needed. The backup generator is fully tested and operational; water tanks are filled to capacity and dog food is in good supply. Several electric company repair trucks are now occupying the parking lot. Many kennel owners and trainers are staying in the compound to care for all of the dogs. GGP is providing them with regular meals, places to sleep, and use of all veterinary supplies. In the event of severe flooding, the greyhounds can be moved to the upper levels of the grandstand. Sally has been outstanding in organizing and implementing their safety plan.

With the impending threat of hurricane Ike making landfall on the Gulf Coast, Gulf Greyhound Park has decided that for the safety and well being of our customers, employees and greyhound athletes we will be canceling live racing Thursday `September 11, 2008` through Sunday `September 14, 2008`.

Gulf Greyhound Park is open for Simulcasting today, Thursday `September 11, 2008`, and will be closed Friday `September 12, 2008` through Sunday `September 14, 2008`.

Weather permitting, live racing will return as scheduled Monday, September 15, 2008. ( from Gulf Greyhound Park website)

Corpus Christi Greyhound Race Track and Valley Race Park do not have any greyhounds on their grounds at this time.

Texas Greyhound Association

Many TGA members in the Waco area are standing by with trucks and trailers to pick up any greyhounds at risk. The TGA is coordinating with the racetrack and its membership to house or transport greyhounds as needed, although we feel the greyhounds are safest staying at the GGP kennels.

The TGA is proud of its many members and the racetracks for stepping up to the challenge of Hurricane Ike and protecting our most precious greyhounds.

Irish Track Tour

The Texas Greyhound Association is looking at organizing a travel tour next year to Ireland to visit some greyhound tracks, farms, etc. This is in the formative stages; no dates or rates have been determined, but we would like to get an idea of potential participants. We think if we can get a good number of people that we can negotiate a good tour price.

It is my understanding that Ireland has turned its greyhound racing industry around, and the idea of many U.S. people going to see a different way of operating might be useful.

The tour would be open to anyone with an interest in greyhound racing, from track managers to greyhound owners to trainers to gamblers. Your thoughts and comments are welcome to determine if this is feasible; call (254) 857-4377 or email Lois if you'd be interested in going on the trip.

IH 35 Expansion and how it affects the TGA:

We contacted TX Dot today concerning the I 35 expansion and it appears that the
East Option is preferred. This option will affect the TGA slightly; our fence line will be
pushed back and the right of way will cut through the office parking lot.

They are in the process of refining the areas of expansion and will hold a hearing late next summer to present the information to the public. The acquisition stage of the project is at least a couple years away.

Texas Racing Commission determines 2008 Greyhound Race Dates:

Last Thursday, October 4, the Texas Racing Commission met to determine the 2008 racing schedule for greyhounds.

Gulf Greyhound Park requested 314 performances. This is made up of Wednesday matinees, Thursday evenings, Friday evenings, Saturday matinees and evenings and Sunday matinees, with 13 races in each performance.

Valley Race Park requested 130 performances, for the meets January 1-April 6, 2008 and November 28-December 31, 2008. Valley's 2007-2008 meet begins this November 23.
Valley's performance schedule is basically Wednesday matinees, Thursday evenings, Friday evenings, Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees with 13 races in each performance. In addition, Valley will add some abbreviated performances to all but Thursday, making each performance 15 races.

The Commissioners approved both the Gulf and Valley schedules, which the TGA supported.

Corpus Christi proposed a 2008 race meet from April 17, 2008 through July 5, 2008. The schedule consisted of 60 performances of 13 races each performance, held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with a matinee on Sunday. Along with this proposed 2008 schedule was a modification to the 2007 schedule, which would close the 2007 meet as of November 19.

As set forth in the TGA's letter to the Commission, the TGA could not support this proposal for a number of reasons. Three Corpus kennel owners and a trainer drove up to Austin for the hearing. After hearing testimony from the TGA, the Commission staff and Flagler (representing Corpus Christi), the Commissioners denied approval of Corpus Christi's proposed 2008 schedule. Subsequently, Corpus withdrew its request to close the 2007 meet early, and will run live through December 31. Since the Commission did not approve 2008 race dates, Corpus will not be allowed to simulcast as of January 1, 2008 and it will effectively close as a racetrack. The Commission did leave the door open for Corpus to modify its request prior to December 31.

The agenda and supporting material is available on the Texas Racing Commission's website. When transcribed, the transcript will also be available there.

This was a difficult decision for everyone involved. Now we need to ensure that an orderly transition will occur, as there are an estimated 500 greyhounds in the kennel compound. We will help facilitate the communication between the kennels and greyhound owners.

January 11, 2006 - Track Update

The TGA schooling track is now open for training. We schooled 49 greyhounds this morning and the lure system ran very well. Our schedule is back to normal, with schooling on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Bring ‘em on.

January 10, 2006 - Track Update

All of the new conductor bar has been installed on the rail. However, we have a few electrical connection problems which we hope to get resolved tomorrow (Wednesday), so we will not be schooling tomorrow. Please check the website tomorrow afternoon for Thursday's schooling.

January 9, 2006 - Track Update

TGA Track Manager Paul Saulters and a hardworking crew of 6 including Phillip Saulters, Ray Campana, David Ritz, David Hays and Doyle Beeman, and assisted by Linda Saulters, made good progress on the track rail repair over the weekend. Despite the wind, which slowed down the soldering of the brass bus bar, a little over 1/2 of the rail is up. We anticipate the rail being completed and tested on Tuesday, with track schooling available on Wednesday. However, please check with Paul or the TGA office on Tuesday afternoon prior to coming up on Wednesday.

January - 6, 2006

We received the final parts this morning, and the replacement of the conductor bar on the schooling track has begun. We will have an estimate tomorrow on the time frame, but we plan on working steadily over the weekend. On Monday, we will post an update on expected completion date. Thank you to all the schoolers for your patience in this project. The resulting product hopefully will be breakdown-free.

December 13, 2005 - The TGA schooling track is closed as of Wednesday, December 14.

December 8, 2005 - Due to the extreme cold, the TGA track will be closed for schooling until Monday, December 12. The track is currently frozen solid, and the forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning is in the upper teens. While it is due to be warmer on Friday afternoon, we do not want greyhounds running with frozen ground a few inches down. It should warm up enough on Saturday and Sunday to make schooling safe for Monday.

December 7, 2005 - Due to the weather forecast of freezing temperatures, strong winds and sleet, the TGA office will close at 3:00 pm on December 7th and reopen at 10:00 am on December 8th. The Schooling Track will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 8th.
